THE NINGXIA WOLFBERRY FARM
Over three decades ago, Young Living Founders Mary and D. Gary Young learned about the legendary Ningxia wolf-berry—a super-fruit revered in northern China for thousands of years but virtually unknown in the West. Intrigued, Gary traveled to the Ningxia region to see it firsthand. There, he visited the Ningxia Wolf-berry Farm, a small operation where locals hand-harvested berries along the fertile floodplains of the Yellow River. The region’s ideal soil, sun, and climate have produced high-quality wolf-berries for more than 700 years.
During his visit, Gary learned that biochemists at the Ningxia Institute of Nutrition had confirmed what locals already knew:
The wolf-berry is one of the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet. Convinced it needed to be shared with the world,
Gary began importing dried wolf berries before pioneering the wolf-berry and essential oil blend now known as NingXia Red.
To preserve the fruit’s nutrition, Young Living partnered with the Ningxia Wolf-berry Farm and an expert in food science to develop a specialized purée system that uses the whole berry.
Today, Young Living continues to source wolf-berries from the Ningxia Wolf-berry Farm and Distillery, which became an official partner farm in 2019. Although the industry has modernized, the farm remains true to its roots—berries are still hand-picked with care, nourished by clean water from the Yellow River, and rigorously tested for purity. The farm also hosts educational field trips on sustainable agriculture. It’s this commitment to tradition, innovation, and quality that makes every sip of NingXia Red so extraordinary.
